Did you know…. according to the Summer 2011 MyBlueMedicare magazine (pg 6) there is a program to help people purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers markets and roadside stands in 80 Michigan counties using coupons. The Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH 2011: A subsidy for older adults at Michigan farm markets states “If you’re older than 60 and your income is limited, you may qualify for this program which can help you buy fresh fruits and vegetables from participating farmers. Older adults who earn up to $20,147 a year for an individual or $27,214 for a family of two are eligible. The program gives coupons to those who qualify. You can use the coupons like cash to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers markets and roadside stands.

… I’m talking Wheatgrass! Maybe you’ve heard about it (most people haven’t except in a vague sort of way) but don’t know what it is. No it isn’t a new form of landscape though I think that would be an improvement over several needy lawns I’ve seen! It isn’t the kind of grass you smoke either, nor do I encourage anyone to try doing this. Wheatgrass (grown from wheat berries) is a grass grown for the sole purpose of being juiced. The juice is high in liquid chlorophyl, containes 103 vitamins, enzymes, amino acides and a plethora of minerals. It is considered ‘nature’s greatest healer.’ Chlorophyl’s molecular makeup is almost identical to the hemoglobin molecule of human blood, with only ONE atom diffence! Chlorophyll’s numerous health benefits (it has antibacterial properties, neutralizes toxins, strengthens and refines tissues, improves liver, digestion, thyroid and blood sugar problems to name a few) will easily improve anyone’s over-all health. One ounce of wheatgrass juice is equal nutritionally to consuming 4.5 pounds of vegetables!

For many people, drinking wheatgrass juice requires ‘getting used to –’ the taste is definitely ‘green and grassy’ in flavor. But it isn’t long before you simply crave the nutrients and love the taste. Your body thrives on this juice! It is worth finding a supplier or looking to grow your own.

Finding a supplier in the Detroit Metropolitan Area of Michigan has just gotten easier. There’s a new business that makes it their business to grow both wheatgrass and sprouts. Check out www.WheatgrassAndSprouts.com Credit union location Colorado Colorado Springs School District 3 Federal Credit Union or call them at 248-625-9775.

Remember Popeye (spinach)? Jolly Green Giant (veggies)? GREEN = strength and power; a mighty ‘force.’ Now we have Wheatgrass! Own your own POWER! Plug into Wheatgrass juice.

Everytime I make this recipe, I get ‘rave’ reviews (seriously!) and a request for a copy of the recipe …. so here it is. As my friend said, “Please Credit union location Colorado Denver Denver Fire Department Federal Credit Union spell out EXACTLY how to make it!”

5C prepared broccoli, approximately — to prepare the broccoli cut very small pieces of the head and put into a large bowl; then peel the broccoli stalk with a sharp knife to get access to the ’sweet’ stem. Once the stem is peeled, slice into small slices and add to the bowl.)

Drizzle a little first-pressed, cold-pressed organic olive oil over the salad, and sprinkle lightly with Celtic Sea Salt – with your hands, ‘massage’ the broccoli for several minutes. This process will help to break down the fibers and soften the broccoli.

To the broccoli, add the following:
1/2-1 Cup red onion (chopped)
1 Cup raw (un-toasted, un-salted) sunflower seeds
1/2 Cup organic Thompsons unsulphered raisins

To make the dressing:
In a blender (I have a high-speed Vitamix blender, but you can use a regular blender) blend the following:
1 Cup raw cashews that have been soaked in purified water for 1 hour.
3 Tablespoons Raw Agave Nectar
2 Tablespoons Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 teaspoon Celtic sea salt
1/4 Cup purified water
Blend the dressing ingredients until ‘very smooth’, adjust the sweetness by adding small amounts of additional Agave Nectar to desired sweetness.

Pour the dressing over the bowl of broccoli, mix well. Let stand at least 30 minutes to ‘marinate’ the flavors and plump up the raisins.

Bon Apetite’

Spread mix thinly onto nori sheets – dehydrate 8-12 hours or until crispy.
Add your favorite salad topping & enjoy!
Store in airtight container in cupboard. Will keep for 1 week; longer if stored in the refrigerator

When first made the nori is crunchy and I used it as an open sandwich. Yummmmm….! Credit union location Texas Houston Members Choice Credit Union The nori will soften; then it is really easy to fold in half forming a really ‘posh’ sandwich! Alternatively, the nori can be cut into small squares and put into little plastic bags for you to carry as a handy savory snack.

This makes a great ‘travel’ food which I discovered on my latest boat trip. Because the refrigerator space was limited, it helped I could store this in a cabinet. After a fun-sun-filled day in the water and on the beach, these made GREAT sandwiches fast! Just add fresh greens, sprouts, tomatoes and other veggies! Don’t be afraid to stack it full!

Hello!
It has been some time since I’ve been in touch. (Sorry for that … where do the days go?)

I’ve been busy re-organizing, working on my classes and workshop, and at the same time trying to get back to some healthier, empowering habits (such as juicing) – - I haven’t been as diligent as I used to be and frankly I feel it! Not only that, but my ‘neglect’ shows! My skin, eyes, and nails aren’t as vibrant as they used to be! So here I am, bringing my juicer back out on to the counter top and trying to once more get in the habit of using it – daily!

I prefer juiced drinks over blended drinks. There is a difference between the two. With blended drinks the pulp is part of the drink; juicing removes the pulp. There are great arguments for which is better for you nutritionally, but personally I prefer ‘juicing’. I feel less ‘full’ and I can easily drink a full glass at one sitting.

I’m often asked what I do with left-over pulp so I want to share a few ideas . . .

Make some delicious dehydrated crackers with the pulp. Add some seasoning, flaxseeds and/or sunflower seeds and create some marvelously light nutritional crackers.

To a thick dressing, add pulp and some seasonings to create a terrific veggie dip..

Add to any recipe (e.g. bread, cookies, burgers, pate etc) to ‘bulk it up’

Add to seed cheese with some diced up veggies and seasonings.

Use in veggie or nori wrap.

Add to soup.

Create ‘treats’ your animals will love by dehydrating pulp in patties or add ‘as is’ to their dry mix. If your animal is raw, serve with their raw meal. The pulp provides a better supply of fiber and nutrients than cereal-based pet foods.

As a last resort, blend it with some water and pour the mix in your garden!

One <a href="http:// of my favorite ‘left over almond pulp’ recipe is this fast, quick dessert that tastes amazing!

Chocolate Cake For One Using Left Over Almond Pulp

(leftover pulp from 1 1/2C almond milk prepared with 1/2C almonds)

In a bowl, stir in about 1t Blue Agave Nectar (or more to taste), a pinch of salt, and carob powder (to taste) with Credit union location New York Youngstown Lewiston Porter Federal Credit Union the leftover almond pulp.

A light, airy, nutritious Chocolate Snack to curb any chocolate cravings!

CAUTION: ATTEMPTING A 100% RAW FOOD DIET THIS SEASON CAN HURT YOU

The air has a nip to it, and the leaves up north are changing colors rapidly – Fall is here and Winter is soon approaching.

It is no secret to those who know me that I am always encouraging people to make healthier dietary changes by incorporating more raw whole plant foods into their diet. More is better in my opinion. I’m a walking example of the numerous benefits we all can enjoy eating a high raw food diet ….. more energy, looking and feeling better, weight loss, and improved health. So why not go 100% raw … now? (The sooner the better right?) Why am I sending out this word of caution?

Because I’m interested in seeing people happy, and enjoying success in their life. Because stress IS harmful to the body.

We’re experiencing colder weather and the most challenging (dietary) holidays are descending upon us. Except for the most ardent, strong-willed, determined person most of you will face an enormous challenge making big changes in your diet this time of year, especially if you attempt practicing 100% raw. In fact most people this time of year are severely challenged just to keep their current “healthy diet” status.

When the weather turns cold our first inclination is to have HOT, cooked (comfort) foods. Many people find it difficult to remain raw when the temperature drops. Add to the weather factor the numerous parties, gatherings, and holiday events coming up and even the most ardent raw foodist is challenged to stay raw (yes, it IS easier the longer you’ve been raw).

Take the stress and the challenge out of improving your diet (yes even going 100% raw) by allowing yourself the time and right conditions to ensure your success. Going 100% raw AFTER the holidays is easier than BEFORE the holidays. Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to start 100% raw then and use the upcoming months to transition (taking steps) to that point – it will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Some of those transitional steps could be: giving up caffeine in lieu of the wine, or replace chocolate goodies with carob treats instead, or eating only natural <a href="http:// sugars in place of processed sugars for example.

Keep your commitments simple and practical …. most of all DO-ABLE! You’ll improve your raw status through the holidays without the fear of ‘failure.’

When the NEW YEAR arrives you’ll be better positioned and ready go 100% raw, or at least high raw.

This season enjoy the weather, enjoy the holidays, being with friends, family and co-workers, and most importantly BE HAPPY. Life is more than your diet, but keep in mind your diet will have an effect on your life. It is what you do consistently that matters, not what you do occasionally. Keep things Credit union location Washington Seattle Cascade Federal Credit Union simple – enjoy whole fresh raw fruits and vegetables with abandon.

Bon Appetite’

The raw food diet helps reduce, even eliminate, most symptoms of arthritis. By removing 'toxic foods' and consuming foods rich in nutrients to support the body's immune system and help with bone and joint repair, arthritic sufferers can expect to enjoy living a life that's pain free.

ARE YOU THE ONE OF THREE PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM ARTHRITIS?
-It is estimated that by 2030, 40% of the American population will be suffering from one or another form of arthritis.

- Currently 46 million Americans, or 21% adults, suffer from this disease, but with the rise in obesity and an aging <a href="http:// population the numbers are increasing.

-Two thirds of the people suffering from this disease are under the age of 65, more than 60% or them are women.

-The current cost associated with this disease is more than $128 billion a year in lost earnings and medical care.

-Currently, juvenile arthritis affects some 294,000 children between infancy and age 17.

These are just some of the statistics taken from the January 2008 Issue Arthritis & Rheumatism. A leading researcher, Dr. Charles G. Helmick, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states “We don’t have any cures, we treat the symptoms and, when it gets bad enough, we do joint replacements, which are very expensive.”

What is arthritis?

There are many kinds of arthritis, but the two most common kinds are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis affects the bones and the joints. The primary cause of osteoarthritis is wear and tear on the body, the secondary cause is either from a previous trauma or a previous inflammatory disease of the joint. Swelling of joints, restricted mobility and joint tenderness are typical symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (R/A) is a systemic disease causing inflammation in the joints as well as related structures on both sides of the body. Fatigue, weakness, joint stiffness and pain, increased inflammation affecting all joints in the body are symptoms of R/A. There is increasing evidence that R/A is an autoimmune reaction.

Eliminating nightshades are thought to help arthritis since nightshades are believed to contribute to joint swelling. Nightshades include: potatoes, tomatoes, peppers (green, yellow and red), eggplant, and tobacco. Avoiding citrus, decreasing consumption of sweets and alcohol is also thought to help with alleviating joint swelling. Excluding processed foods, gluten products, strong spices, salt, alcohol, tea, coffee, processed fats and oils also recommended. A raw food diet (which is naturally low in fats and calories when practiced properly) is natural low in fats, calories, and eliminates most aggravators of arthritis.

Nutrients found in whole plant foods (especially Credit union location Nebraska Omaha Greater Omaha Federal Credit Union in uncooked fresh fruits and vegetables)are helpful in alleviating or even eliminating symptoms of arthritis. Whole plant foods include: carrots, spinach, beet greens, broccoli, kale, parsley, ginger root, apple, pineapple, cherries and blueberries, most nuts (walnuts in particular), and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, flax, chia and hemp seeds all highly recommended). The raw food diet is particularly high in all of these nutrients.

I was diagnosed with R/A throughout my whole body (“….comparable to a 94 year old,” my doctor told me) and told I would be bedridden and crippled; I wasn’t even close to 50 years old! The raw food diet successfully eliminated my arthritic symptoms and I have enjoyed years of pain-free living. I feel better today (age 57) than I did in my 20’s.

I wouldn’t say I’ve ‘cured’ my arthritis, in fact my hip is showing signs of osteoarthritis (wear and tear) – I’m an aggressive competitive tennis player, but I have better control over the symptoms. Through healthy juicing, stricter diet controls, and a well-thought out exercise program I hope to improve the condition of my hip significantly, re-building the cartilage from the ‘inside out’.

The raw food diet continues to build my body with the proper nutrients, eliminate toxins that are creating inflammation, and repair what needs repairing. Our bodies, as is our health, is too important to ignore………………..when I start to gravitate away from the basics, I suffer — joint pain is a signal that I’m not ‘paying attention.’

If you too are experiencing aches, pains, and stiffness, isn’t it time you start ‘paying attention’ and get down to the cause, take aggressive dietary action, and not just cover up the symptoms?
